The Territorial Police in Greater Bushenyi and Sheema have taken into custody seven students from Nganwa High School, Kabwohe, for inciting violence on the night of 9.10.2023, around 10 pm. It had been a tradition at the school for S.4 students to bid farewell by beating students from other classes. However, this time, the S.4 candidates organized and attacked students from other classes, leading to serious clashes within the school.

Sheema police promptly responded, restoring order at the school. The seven ringleaders were identified and arrested. They are Nuwasharamu Prosper (18 years old, S.4), Andinda Roden (18, S.4), Nganzi Owen (18, S.4), Kato Timothy (18, S.4), Akandwanaho Allan (19, S.4), Nuwasiima Saul (17), and Matama Samuel. Student victims injured during the fights were rushed to Sheema Hospital for treatment, including Aruho Benon (19 years old, S.4), and Mustafa, an S.5 student.

In a separate incident, the police in Aswa West and Gulu West divisions apprehended four students from Gulu West Division. They attacked Rubangakene Samuel, a 29-year-old resident of Airfields Cell, Bardego Ward, in Gulu City on 10.10.2023, around 5:40 am, resulting in his death. The suspects, returning from a disco hall, assaulted him over a girl. The deceased’s body was found near the roadside between Gulu Army SS and St. Jude Orphanage Primary School. The four suspects include Rubangakene Paul David (18, student), Okot Ivan Anthony (18, student), Lual Deng Dit (18, South Sudanese student), and Opoka Ammalon (15, male juvenile).

The police strongly condemn these acts of violence by students and urge all school administrators to remind students of the importance of resisting peer pressure and acting responsibly.
