Alebtong, Uganda– Opio Dicken Adung, a nursing officer and resident of Corner Abako village, Ojul parish, Awei sub-county in Alebtong district, is currently under investigation by the police for alleged theft and possession of government stores. The arrest followed a complaint lodged by Mr. Okello Jimmy, the Assistant Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Alebtong district.
According to police reports, on August 12, 2024, at around 11:00 AM, Mr. Okello Jimmy received credible information that Opio was in possession of government-issued drugs, which he was allegedly storing in his private drug shop. Acting swiftly, Mr. Okello Gilbert, the Deputy RDC of Alebtong, went to the Awei Police Station and coordinated an operation with two officers to investigate the claims.
During the operation, the police officers conducted a thorough search of Opio’s drug shop. They discovered an empty box labeled “UG,” a buffer testing strip, an HCG strip, an empty malaria test strip, a urinalysis bay labeled “UG,” and Coartem tablets that were marked “Not for Sale.” These findings strongly indicated that the drugs were government-issued and not intended for resale.
SP Jimmy Patrick Okema, the North Kyoga Regional Police PRO, confirmed the discovery, stating that all the empty boxes and other items were confiscated and transported to Alebtong Central Police Station (CPS) for further investigation. The District Health Officer (DHO) of Alebtong verified the recovered drugs, which were documented and displayed by crime officers as part of the ongoing investigation.
“We want to commend the whistleblower and the prompt actions of the Assistant and Deputy RDCs of Alebtong, whose involvement was crucial in this operation,” SP Okema remarked. “Their presence and swift response significantly energized our efforts to address this serious issue.”
Opio Dicken Adung remains in police custody as his file has been forwarded to the Resident City State Attorney for review and legal advice. The investigation is ongoing, and further developments will be communicated as they arise.
