The Vice President of Uganda, Jessica Alupo, delivered a poignant condolence message on behalf of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni at the funeral of the late Joseph Tamale Mirundi, a former Presidential Press Secretary and influential NRM ideologue, in Kyotera District today.
In her address, Vice President Alupo conveyed the deep sadness of President Museveni and the entire government at the passing of Tamale Mirundi. She described him as a courageous commentator and a respected intellectual whose contributions to national discourse and NRM ideology had left an indelible mark on the country.
“Tamale Mirundi was a household name due to his fearless and truthful commentary on current affairs both locally and internationally,” Alupo stated. She highlighted Mirundi’s role as a passionate advocate for governance, anti-corruption, and social justice, underscoring his significant impact on public opinion through both social and mainstream media.
Alupo echoed President Museveni’s sentiments regarding Mirundi’s role within the NRM Party, likening him to a priest who played a crucial role in articulating and internalizing the party’s principles of patriotism, Pan-Africanism, socio-economic transformation, and democracy. She emphasized that his death was a significant loss, not only to his family but to the NRM Party and the nation as a whole.
In addition to delivering the President’s condolences, Vice President Alupo announced that the President has provided a financial contribution of 10 million Ugandan Shillings to assist the bereaved family during this difficult time. She also assured the family that their requests and concerns would be conveyed directly to President Museveni, with a response to follow as soon as possible.
Alupo extended heartfelt condolences to Mirundi’s family, assuring them that the NRM Party remains a supportive clan in their time of loss. She urged the late Mirundi’s children to draw inspiration from their father’s legacy and emphasized the honorable nature of his life and service.
“Although he is no longer with us, Tamale Mirundi’s distinguished service to his motherland should be a source of pride and a lasting legacy,” she said.
As the ceremony concluded, the collective sense of grief was tempered by a recognition of Mirundi’s significant contributions and enduring influence. The support extended by President Museveni and the NRM Party was a testament to the esteem in which Mirundi was held.
