In a devastating attack by Boko Haram terrorists, at least 87 people were killed in Mafa, a town in Tarmuwa Local Government Area of Yobe State, Nigeria. The lifeless bodies of 37 victims have been transported to Babbangida General Hospital, where preparations for a mass burial at 10 a.m. are underway. The burial will take place at the Babangida Emir’s Palace, with Yobe State Deputy Governor Hon. Idi Barde Gubana and other senior government officials expected to attend.
The attack, which occurred around 4 p.m. as residents were returning from their agricultural activities, resulted in significant loss of life and property. Many victims were farmers, and their homes and businesses were also set ablaze by the insurgents.
Sources from the community reported that the terrorists, numbering more than 50 and arriving on motorcycles, carried out the assault, killing at least 87 people, though only 37 bodies have so far been recovered. Some victims perished in the bush, making it difficult for the military to recover all the remains.
This attack is believed to be a retaliatory action by the terrorists, following an incident in July when local residents provided intelligence to the military, leading to a successful operation against Boko Haram fighters. The terrorists left behind fliers with Arabic inscriptions, further emphasizing their presence and intent.
The Yobe State Police Command has confirmed the attack but stated that details remain unclear due to network failures in the affected area. Security forces have been dispatched to the region to restore order.
The attack adds to a growing list of violent incidents in Yobe State, where Boko Haram continues to target communities, leaving a trail of destruction and loss. The situation remains tense as authorities work to manage the aftermath of this latest tragedy.
