This evening, the Uganda Police released an official statement regarding the alleged shooting of Hon. Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, widely known as Bobi Wine, the President of the National Unity Platform (NUP).
The incident, which occurred on September 3, 2024, has ignited widespread controversy and raised serious questions about the circumstances surrounding it.
According to the police, Kyagulanyi had attended a Thanksgiving ceremony in Bulindo, Kiira Municipality, Wakiso District. The event, hosted by his lawyer, George Musisi, concluded without incident. However, conflicting accounts have emerged regarding what transpired afterward.
The police statement explains that after the ceremony, Kyagulanyi and his team decided to proceed on foot in a procession towards Bulindo town. Police officers present at the scene advised against the procession, citing concerns about public safety and potential road obstruction. Despite these warnings, Kyagulanyi’s team allegedly insisted on continuing, leading to a confrontation with the police.
During this altercation, it is reported that Kyagulanyi sustained injuries. The police claim that these injuries were the result of Kyagulanyi stumbling while attempting to get into his vehicle. However, Kyagulanyi and his team assert that he was shot by the police during the confrontation.
Following the incident, Kyagulanyi was rushed to Najaeem Medical Centre in Bulindo, where he received initial treatment.
The police have stated that a thorough investigation will be conducted to uncover the facts surrounding the alleged shooting and other related incidents. The investigation aims to clarify the conflicting narratives and determine the true nature of the event.
