Esteemed judicial activist Joshua Okello has founded the Global Litigation Initiative (GLI), a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting justice and defending human rights across the globe.
“I am thrilled to introduce GLI, a pivotal step in my journey as a judicial activist,” said Okello, Founder and CEO of the GLI. “Our mission is to create a platform for marginalized communities to access justice, ensuring that those in positions of power are held accountable for their actions.”
The organization’s key objectives include advancing public interest litigation, alleviating sickness and financial hardship, promoting health, and providing critical guidance and information on public interest litigation.
“We are committed to tirelessly safeguarding the rights of the vulnerable and ensuring that justice prevails,” Okello emphasized. “GLI will work collaboratively with other organizations to fortify the rule of law and champion human rights on a global scale.”
A seasoned lawyer and passionate advocate for social justice, Okello has played a pivotal role in several high-profile cases. His legal victories include a public interest lawsuit in Soroti City, where he successfully defended the city’s trade order in the Soroti High Court. Recently, Okello filed a defamation lawsuit against both the UK and US governments, challenging the sanctions imposed on Uganda’s Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among.
With his extensive legal expertise and dedication to judicial activism, Okello has established himself as a leading voice in the global fight for human rights.
In his launch statement, Okello expressed optimism about the far-reaching impact of GLI. “Our mission extends beyond legal advocacy; we aim to relieve sickness, alleviate financial hardship, and promote health through legal support and essential services. By providing critical guidance and information on public interest litigation, we empower individuals and communities who need it most.”
The Global Litigation Initiative plans to offer comprehensive support in the form of funds, goods, and services, while forging strategic partnerships with like-minded charities and organizations. “This NGO will empower us to make a substantial impact, not only in Uganda but globally, as we collaborate with local and international bodies to secure justice for all,” Okello added.
With an ambitious mandate, GLI aims to raise funds, conduct research, and engage in activities that promote legal rights and justice for underprivileged communities. The organization will also offer training, seminars, and conferences to advance its mission of promoting justice and equality on a global scale.
