The Minister of Works and Transport, Gen. Edward Katumba Wamala, has officially announced the closure of Karuma Bridge to all traffic starting Monday, September 23, 2024. The bridge will remain closed for three months to allow for major restoration works, including the demolition of the concrete deck, which is critical for the bridge’s overall rehabilitation.
This temporary closure is expected to cause significant changes in the usual traffic routes between key locations in Uganda, particularly for motorists traveling between Kampala, Gulu, West Nile, and Lira. To minimize disruption, alternative routes have been provided.
Motorists traveling from Kampala to Gulu or West Nile are advised to use the Luwero—Kafu—Masindi—Paraa route through Murchison Falls National Park. This route will connect to either Pakwach or Gulu via Olwiyo, offering a detour for both Kampala-bound and West Nile travelers.
For those heading to Lira, two alternative routes have been recommended. One option is to take the Rwenkunye—Apac road, which includes a ferry crossing at Masindi Port. Alternatively, motorists can take the Iganga—Nakalama—Tirinyi—Pallisa—Kumi—Soroti route, which also leads to Lira.
The Ministry urges all road users to exercise patience and caution as these detours are expected to add travel time. The restoration of Karuma Bridge is a key infrastructural upgrade aimed at improving long-term connectivity and safety for motorists across the country.
