Police in Lira City have arrested 59 criminal gang members responsible for disrupting security and engaging in a range of criminal activities.
The arrests come in response to numerous complaints from residents about these gangs’ involvement in robberies, thefts, break-ins, alleged rapes, ambushing people, and snatching phones and bags. The criminals were also reported to be abusing drugs.
SP Patrick Jimmy Okema, the North Kyoga Regional Police Spokesperson, confirmed that the operation was conducted during the night of 16th and 17th September 2024. It was an intelligence-led operation, commanded by the DPC Lira City CPS, and targeted dark spot areas such as Kitgum Stage, Tekulu Cell, Tedam, Barogole, Kakoge, Te-Obai, Juba Road Market, Odyek Ijang Market, and other locations.
A total of 59 suspects were apprehended at various spots. Some were found using and possessing drugs such as opium (Indian hemp), while others were found consuming aviation fuel, which reportedly gave them the confidence and strength to commit crimes. The police recovered aviation fuel and opium from the suspects, and the exhibits have been documented. The suspects were charged accordingly and are currently detained. Investigations are ongoing, and files are being compiled for submission to the Resident Chief State Attorney (RCSA) for review and legal advice before charges are formally sanctioned.
SP Okema also urged individuals who had previously reported cases related to these crimes to follow up with the OC CID. He encouraged the public to support the police in building strong evidence against the suspects to ensure successful prosecution in a court of law.
