A 24-year-old woman is in critical condition at Soroti Regional Referral Hospital after a vicious assault by her boyfriend in Pamba, Soroti City, last night. The victim, Consy Amwola, suffered extensive burns to her face, arms, and legs after her boyfriend, identified as 30-year-old Eliot Wakabi, allegedly doused her with petrol and set her ablaze inside a locked house.
Amwola, originally from Opyai, Kalaki, had reportedly been in a turbulent relationship with Wakabi, whom her sister, Suzan Aniko, described as highly controlling. According to Aniko, the pair had been dating for a few months, but the relationship soured after Amwola refused the man’s marriage proposal.
Neighbors were alerted by Amwola’s desperate cries for help and broke into the house to save her, but not before she had sustained life-threatening injuries. She was rushed to Soroti Regional Referral Hospital, where doctors are fighting to stabilize her condition.
Amwola had recently relocated to Soroti City after leaving her marriage in Apokor, Kakure Sub-county. She has three children from her previous relationship and had been working at a local pork joint in Pamba to support herself. Despite maintaining a distant relationship with her family, her sister revealed they had remained in contact and expressed deep concern over Amwola’s circumstances.
By press time, police had not yet issued an official statement regarding the incident. Local authorities have launched an investigation, and Eliot Wakabi remains at large. The incident has left the community in shock, with calls growing for justice and greater protection for women in abusive relationships.
