Kotido, Uganda – September 26, 2024 – The deaf football team’s impressive 4-3 victory against a select team from Kotido Secondary School has set the stage for Uganda’s International Day of the Deaf celebrations tomorrow.
The electrifying match, held at Kotido Stadium, was part of the International Day of the Deaf celebrations sponsored by Silent Cafe, AITA, Christian Blind Mission (CBM), CEBTRAN, Deaf Sign Alliance (DSA), and UNFPA. This sponsorship demonstrates the organizations’ commitment to promoting inclusivity and empowering the deaf community.
Otim Lawrence, sign language interpreter at CEBTRAN Centre for Sign Language Bible Translation Network, emphasized the event’s significance. “This match showcases the deaf community’s abilities, breaking stereotypes and promoting inclusivity. We’re proud to demonstrate our skills and teamwork.” He highlighted that the event aims to promote awareness, understanding, and acceptance of the deaf community.
The deaf team’s triumph was met with jubilation, with fans cheering and waving flags. The team’s coach attributed the win to dedication and hard work. “Our players have trained tirelessly, and this victory is a testament to their perseverance.” The team’s victory is a shining example of the deaf community’s capabilities and potential.
Tomorrow’s International Day of the Deaf celebrations will feature an array of events. Sign language performances will showcase Ugandan dialects, while art exhibitions will highlight deaf artists’ talents. Cultural dances from various regions will be performed, and talent shows will display deaf individuals’ skills. These events aim to promote awareness and understanding of the deaf community, empower deaf individuals through inclusive opportunities, and foster equal access to education, employment, and healthcare
