Irene Chekwoti has been appointed Principal Climate Change Officer at Uganda’s Ministry of Water and Environment, Climate Change Department (CCD). In her new role, she will lead efforts to address the country’s climate challenges and drive sustainable development initiatives. With extensive experience in environmental management and climate policy, Chekwoti is expected to guide Uganda’s climate action strategies, develop policies, and work with local and international stakeholders to meet the nation’s climate commitments.
Her appointment comes at a crucial time, as Uganda seeks to strengthen its response to the impacts of climate change, including environmental degradation and natural disasters. Chekwoti is recognized for her expertise in climate resilience and her dedication to community-centered solutions, making her a strong leader to champion reforestation, disaster preparedness, and other key environmental initiatives.
The Ministry of Water and Environment expressed confidence in Chekwoti’s leadership, highlighting the critical role she will play in ensuring a more sustainable and climate-resilient future for Uganda.
