Vice President Maj. Rtd. Jessica Alupo has called on the youth to take an active role in promoting peace, tolerance, and coexistence. She emphasized that young people should not merely be passive beneficiaries but active champions in the peace process.
Alupo commended the leadership of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) government, stating that Uganda is now enjoying the benefits of stability, unity, security, and economic progress due to the hard-fought journey towards peace.
Her message was delivered by the Minister of Gender, Labour, and Social Development, Betty Amongi, during the inaugural “Pathways to Peace” event at the Youth Convention on the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), youth, peace, and security.
Reflecting on Uganda’s past struggles with conflict and instability, she noted that the country has emerged as a global beacon of peace, thanks to President Yoweri Museveni’s leadership. “This peace did not come by accident; it is the result of a deliberate commitment to tolerance, non-violence, and inclusive governance,” she remarked.
She highlighted the importance of the youth in the upcoming elections, pointing out that they are not only the largest demographic but also the most dynamic, energetic, and innovative part of society.
Alupo emphasized that the youth have a vital role in shaping Uganda’s future by becoming leaders and peacebuilders. She expressed that the convention sets the stage for young people to take up their rightful role in resolving conflicts through dialogue and promoting peaceful coexistence, regardless of differences in background or beliefs.
Furthermore, she underscored that Africa is at a crucial juncture, where it must provide its young people with opportunities for growth, employment, and economic participation. She noted that the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) offers an unprecedented opportunity for Africa to unlock its economic potential, but stressed that peace and security are essential for its success.
