Kenya will host Cameroon at Namboole Stadium on Monday, October 14, 2024, for their crucial 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualification match. However, the Kenya Football Federation has confirmed that the match will be played behind closed doors.
This decision stems from concerns that Ugandan fans might heavily support Cameroon due to the presence of Manchester United goalkeeper André Onana. During Cameroon’s earlier encounter against Zimbabwe at the same venue, Ugandan fans created a celebratory atmosphere, showering Onana with enthusiastic support. The Manchester United goalkeeper became the focal point of attention, as fans wore the iconic red kits of the English club, waved Red Devils flags, and loudly cheered him on throughout the match.
Kenyan officials fear a repeat of this scene, with Ugandan fans potentially overshadowing their support and creating an unbalanced environment. This led to the federation’s decision to close the stadium to fans in a bid to maintain neutrality and avoid disruptions.
Kenya is determined to secure a victory as they seek to solidify their path to the 2025 AFCON tournament. However, Cameroon, with Onana in goal, poses a significant challenge.
