The newly appointed Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Amuru, Osborn Oceng Geoffrey, presided as the chief guest at the celebration of World Teachers’ Day at Amuru Lamogi Primary School.
In his address, he emphasized the importance of teachers planning for their retirement early and encouraged them to continuously upgrade their skills and knowledge. “As educators, it is crucial to be prepared for the future, especially during retirement, and to keep learning to stay relevant in this fast-evolving world,” he remarked.
The event, which was attended by a large number of teachers and education stakeholders, highlighted the crucial role of educators in shaping society, but also brought to light the numerous challenges they face. Representatives of the teachers’ leadership raised pressing issues, including the lack of adequate accommodation, the persistently low salaries, and the high teacher-to-student ratio, which makes it nearly impossible to provide sufficient attention to each learner.
“The economic strains of today have made it difficult to survive on our current salaries, and many of us struggle with the large class sizes, which hinders our ability to effectively teach every child,” one of the teacher leaders lamented.
The concerns were echoed by many present, who noted that the poor working conditions were demotivating and affecting the overall quality of education.
In response, RDC Oceng Geoffrey acknowledged the legitimacy of their concerns and assured them of his support. He promised to sit down with the teachers’ leadership to craft a comprehensive report, which he would forward to the relevant government offices. “I will personally follow up on this matter to ensure that the challenges you face are addressed,” he said.
The World Teachers’ Day celebrations in Amuru not only recognized the vital contributions of teachers but also highlighted the urgent need for improvements in their working conditions.
