The Uganda Prisons Service (UPS) has responded to public concerns about its new uniform, dismissing claims that it suggests a “military” function. The new design was officially unveiled during the Independence Day celebrations in Busia District.
This uniform features bold colors, including orange, maroon, brown, and beige, with a prominent UPS badge on the left arm. Despite the new look, the maroon beret and boots from the old uniform have been retained.
Frank Baine, the UPS spokesperson, clarified that the new uniform will not replace the current one entirely. “The old uniform remains the main one; this new one is for specific activities,” he explained. It will be used by safety and security units, particularly officers who escort hardcore criminals, those engaged in field operations, and officers assigned to escort Very Important Persons (VIPs).
The new attire is being manufactured by Nytil, a textile company based in Jinja. Baine addressed concerns that the UPS was trying to militarize its service, stating, “The clothes cannot change the mindset of a person.”
Public reactions to the new uniform have been mixed. “There are always divergent opinions,” Baine noted, “but the majority seem to like it.”
