Kotido, Uganda – In a bold move to address the pressing sanitation concerns in Kotido Central Division, authorities have announced a 90-day ultimatum for landlords without latrines or toilets to comply with the requirements.
The directive, announced by Central Division Health Inspector Ongodia Gilbert, aims to promote proper sanitation facilities and cleanliness in the area. According to Ongodia, landlords have been given 90 days to install latrines or toilets in their premises, failure to which will result in legal action.
“This is not just a matter of convenience, but a matter of public health,” Ongodia emphasized. “Open defecation and lack of proper sanitation facilities pose significant health risks to residents and visitors alike.”
Key measures to improve sanitation include:
– 90-day ultimatum for landlords to install latrines or toilets
– Impounding of stray animals
– 20,000 shilling fine for open defecation
– Lobbying for cleaning equipment
Assistant Town Clerk Jane noted that the division is committed to addressing garbage management and public health concerns. “We are introducing fines for littering and urging landlords to add a 5,000 shilling fee to rent for rubbish collection,” Jane explained.
Division Treasurer Awori Immaculate reported a collection of 138,736 local revenue, 229,223 local wage, and 28,076 development, with a budget of 189,744,017 for the year.
Principal CDO Lemukol Lilly highlighted the need for improved public health services, urging the health inspector to step up efforts.
The move is expected to significantly improve sanitation and hygiene in Kotido Central Division, benefiting residents and visitors. Authorities are confident that the ultimatum will prompt landlords to take necessary action.
The community has welcomed the initiative, with many residents expressing relief. “This is long overdue,” said one resident. “We are tired of living in unsanitary conditions.”
With the 90-day ultimatum in place, Kotido Central Division authorities are determined to ensure a cleaner, healthier environment for all.
