South Sudan – Leaders from the Ateker community gathered in South Sudan this week for a significant East African Community (EAC) Peace Caravan, aiming to promote peace, unity, and economic empowerment among the Ateker communities spanning Uganda, Kenya, and South Sudan. The event, organized at the tri-junction where the three nations meet, brought together influential figures committed to fostering a cooperative spirit to uplift the region.
Caroline Angolere, Special Presidential Assistant for Political Affairs and a native of Karamoja, addressed the gathering with a passionate call for unity among the cattle-keeping tribes. Renowned for her work in unifying communities across borders, Angolere emphasized that unity was essential for the Ateker people’s future. “When we are united, we are unbreakable,” she declared. “Our unity not only strengthens our ties as neighboring communities but also paves the way for mutual prosperity that extends beyond borders. This unity will empower our youth and create lasting change for generations to come.”
Angolere underscored that a shared commitment to peace would enable the Ateker people to pool their resources, develop joint economic initiatives, and uplift vulnerable groups, particularly the Karacuna (youth) and widows. Her powerful message resonated deeply, leaving attendees with a renewed sense of purpose to strengthen bonds across the Ateker region. “Together, we can ensure that every member of our community has the opportunity to thrive,” she added, reinforcing the core message of the peace caravan.
Mr. Edopu Edeku Peter, the main facilitator of the peace caravan, served as a mediator throughout the discussions. As a central figure in orchestrating the event, Edopu kept his remarks brief but impactful. “Peace is our pathway to development,” he remarked, echoing the sentiment that harmony within the community is essential for progress. He highlighted that, with peace, the Ateker community could unlock their collective potential, effectively harnessing resources to create better livelihoods for all.
The EAC Peace Caravan in South Sudan sought to lay the groundwork for long-term collaboration and sustainable development across the Ateker territories. With leaders like Angolere advocating for unity and leaders like Edopu facilitating discussions, the caravan has set a promising foundation for the region. Both leaders emphasized that peace and cooperation are essential steps toward achieving a stable and prosperous Ateker community, underscoring the power of cross-border solidarity.
As the peace caravan concluded, attendees left with a shared commitment to work together for a brighter future, inspired by a vision of unity and cooperation that will guide the Ateker people toward sustained peace and prosperity. The event has sparked hope that, through continued dialogue and shared efforts, the Ateker communities across Uganda, Kenya, and South Sudan can thrive as a united, empowered people.
