Lira-The Health Minister, Jane Ruth Acieng has made a call to the Association of Surgions of Uganda (ASOU) to continue conducting medical camps in Lango Sub – Region after over 1400 patients showed up on shot notice during the recently concluded activity.
A total of 1,407 patients with different ailments underwent surgery in Lango region during a one week’s medical camp activities.
The surgeries were undertaken during a free surgical camp conducted by the health ministry and surgeons under the Association of surgeons of Uganda (ASOU).
The association president, prof. Frank Asiimwe said that surgeons also conducted consultations on over 2,000 other patients who could not be handled due to the limited resources and time.
Asiimwe expressed success noting that all the surgeries were successful with out any death cases reported during a week long surgical camp.
He applouded the health minister Dr.Jane Aceng Ochero for steering the Mobilization of funds that made the activity a success.
According to Asiimwe, ASOU has handled the biggest number of patients ever in any region of Uganda which he attributed to good mobilization.
ASOU Vice president prof. Galukunnde said that in 2019 in Hoima district, about 450 patients were screened and 220 under went successful surgeries. In Bukedea last year they operated 734 out of the 1,243 that showed up meaning there was an increment recorded in Lango.
He thanked the team of surgeons for the sacrifice they made to leave their respective workplaces to serve the people of Lango.
Aceng told this website that this bigger number of patients operated is a clear indication that the people of Lango have silently been suffering the burden of diseases.
“Most of the people in Lango are venerable and unable to attain the surgical service in expensive health facilities of Kampala. I therefore, urge the surgeons to consider returning to handle the remaining patients in the region,” she said.
