Katakwi: The Organization known as Opul Skilling Foundation Africa in partnership with Soroti Catholic Diocese have trained a section of Livestock farmers in Katakwi district on artificial insemination to revive their past glorious economy.
The training held at St. Simon’s Catholic Church, Magoro, was aimed at equipping farmers with skills and knowledge in Artificial insemination to improve on their animal breeds in their respective villages.
Speaking at the event, Joseph Opul the Chief Executive Director of Opul Skilling Foundation Africa, said that the training will undoubtedly contribute to the improvement of livestock breeding practices and the overall agricultural sector as they aim at reaching all farmers in the region.
“This intervention will help to improve local animal production and boost productivity, hence ensuring that farmers remain competitive in the market. Improving production helps communities, demonstrates the government’s commitment to supporting local economic growth and agricultural development,” he said.
He emphasized the importance for technical personnel to prioritize assisting farmers without deviating from their primary goal. Additionally, he cautioned them against overcharging the farmers, considering that cattle serve as the main source of income for many families.
According to Fr. Daniel Moses Oreet, the organizer of the training, embracing the technology by all farmers will lead to increased productivity considering the fact that many farmers in Katakwi district lost many cows during the recent cattle rustling, hence resulting in the significant disparity in milk production.
“I express gratitude to Opul Skilling Foundation Africa for coming with several veterinary experts to collaborate with the Catholic Church to equip farmers with training and equipment for artificial insemination. I pledge my complete support to the farmers especially my Christians of Magoro in order to enhance productivity,” he said.
Katakwi, a neighboring district to Karamoja region prone to attacks from Karamojong cattle rustlers, has for the record of 4 months gone silent without any attack.
The warriors who mainly target livestock during the raids have been terrorizing their neighboring districts for a long period though the government is at its best to wipe out the vice (Cattle rustling)
