Ministry of Water and Environment officials together with a delegation from the World Bank, have on Wednesday 28-2-2024 concluded Catchment management monitoring exercise which started from Kochi Sub-county, to Lori Sub-county, to Yumbe Town council and lastly concluded in Ludara Sub-county in Koboko District.
The world bank funded project aims at sensitizing and involving the community members in the fight against climate change by actively participating in tree planting, restoration of wetlands among others.
A farmer in Kochi Sub-county Mr Waiga Hamza urged the Ministry of Water and Environment together with the contractors to include the landlords when training beneficiaries of the project.
Suzan Nadia, a refugee and also vice Chairperson for the grievance committee formed in the Catchment area of Lori Sub-county pledged her total support on behalf of the refugees, to make sure they cooperate in implementation of the project.
Lori Sub-county LC3 Chairman Hon Rashid Kawawa Godson thanked the government of Uganda for lobbying the money from the World Bank to fund it.
While thanking the community members for offering land for the project, the LC3 Chairman decried lack of support exhibited in some other areas when implementing these kinds of projects.
Senior Hydrogeologist in Ministry of Water and Environment, Kateke Winnie says, their aim for this project is to restore 268 Km of river banks along River Kochi which stretches Koboko District upto Yumbe District, adding that, they also have a target to restore 110 hectares from Koboko upto Obongi district.
The Ministry says, there are some affirmative actions that will be offered in the future to help people and the households affected by implementation of these projects.
