In a bid to uplift the educational prospects of the vulnerable community in Ochero County, St. Paul Ochero Catholic Parish has inaugurated a technical institute named after the late clergyman Rev. Fr. Francis Ejuru. The institute, aptly named “Inste Them,” aims to provide educational opportunities for individuals who face barriers to continuing their studies beyond primary or secondary levels.
Rev. Moses Apuri, speaking on behalf of the parish council, revealed that the idea to establish a technical school in memory of the late Father Francis Ejuru stemmed from a desire to support the youth and community of Ochero. Since its inception, the institute has already enrolled 25 students, commencing classes on February 5, 2024. The curriculum encompasses courses such as BCP (Basic Computer Programming), Fashion Design, and Hairdressing, catering to students who have completed primary seven and senior four but are unable to pursue further education due to financial constraints or other circumstances.
Father Francis Ejuru, the third parish priest of Ochero parish, served alongside Father Edmond Okela until his passing in 2011. His dedication to his parishioners earned him admiration and love, as expressed by James Oparo, a caterer who fondly remembers the late father’s compassionate nature and devoutness. Father Ejuru’s demise has left a void within the community, with many expressing sorrow over the loss of their beloved parish priest.
Among the students at Inste Them is Mercy Ayuno, who chose to pursue hairdressing after completing primary seven due to financial difficulties. Mercy, the eldest of six children orphaned by the loss of both parents, hopes to support her siblings through her skills in the future. Similarly, Lawrence Ekinu, a father of two, opted for fashion design courses after facing challenges securing employment following his senior four education. Lawrence emphasizes the enduring value of acquiring skills, citing the potential for earning income to sustain his family.
The establishment of the technical institute signifies a commitment to empower the youth and underserved members of the community, honoring the legacy of Father Francis Ejuru. Through practical education and skills training, Inste Them aims to equip students with the tools necessary for self-sufficiency and a brighter future in Ochero County.
