In light of a concerning surge in domestic violence and neglect cases across Soroti and Teso sub-regions, local communities are being implored to reconsider family planning and produce manageable numbers of children.
Recent statistics have revealed a troubling trend, with a significant portion of young women giving birth within short intervals without adhering to natural child spacing methods. This unchecked reproduction pattern has contributed to a rapid increase in the overall population growth of the country, surpassing previous years’ figures.
Hon. Ann Adeke Ebaju, the Soroti District Woman Member of Parliament, emphasized the direct correlation between teenage pregnancies, unplanned births, and the escalation of divorce rates and domestic violence incidents. She stressed that the inability of men to adequately provide for their families due to economic strain exacerbates tensions within households.
Echoing similar concerns, Hon. Helen Adoa Abeku, the Minister of State for Fisheries and Woman Member of Parliament for Serere District, pointed out the phenomenon of men shirking their responsibilities, leaving women to shoulder the burdens alone while simultaneously expecting them to bear excessive offspring.
The call to action underscores the urgent need for community-wide awareness campaigns on family planning and responsible parenthood. Authorities are advocating for accessible reproductive health services and comprehensive sex education to empower individuals, particularly women, with the knowledge and resources to make informed decisions about their reproductive health.
“Unchecked reproduction patterns have contributed to a rapid increase in the overall population growth of the country, surpassing previous years’ figures thus increased poverty since family incomes are low as compared to the size of the family. ” Said Ebaju
Efforts to address the root causes of domestic violence and neglect must prioritize promoting gender equality, economic empowerment, and equitable distribution of household responsibilities. By fostering an environment conducive to healthy family dynamics and sustainable population growth, communities can mitigate the detrimental effects of overpopulation and alleviate the strain on social services and resources.
