Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky issued a stark warning, indicating that without crucial US military aid, Ukraine would be compelled to yield more territory to Russia. Urging the US Congress to swiftly approve a new aid package worth billions of dollars, Zelensky emphasized the critical role of this assistance in safeguarding Ukraine’s sovereignty and security.
The Biden administration’s proposal to trim $95 billion in international aid packages, including $60 billion designated for Ukraine, has raised concerns. While the Senate approved the aid package, it remains stalled in the House of Representatives, prompting Zelensky to underscore the urgent need for support. Without it, he cautioned, major Ukrainian cities could face heightened vulnerability.
Speaking to The Washington Post, Zelensky outlined the ramifications of a lack of US assistance, highlighting the potential depletion of essential military resources. “No US support means we will have no air defense, no Patriot missiles, no jammers for electronic warfare, no 155-millimeter shells,” he emphasized, painting a grim picture of the consequences. “This will mean we go back little by little, in small steps.”
Zelensky further explained that without adequate support, Kiev would be forced to scale back its war efforts, focusing instead on resource protection and distribution. This contraction, he warned, could significantly impact the course and outcome of the conflict. Illustrating the challenge with a vivid example, he stated, “Suppose you need 8,000 bullets a day to protect your frontline. But you have two thousand rounds. Then you have to slow down.”
Expressing apprehension over the prospect of a shrinking frontline, Zelensky voiced concerns that any breach could pave the way for Russian forces to advance towards major Ukrainian cities. Since Moscow launched its offensive nearly two years ago, much of Ukraine’s eastern region has remained under Russian military control, exacerbating the country’s plight.
The recent withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from the town of Avdiivka on the eastern front underscores the ongoing challenges faced by Ukraine in its struggle against Russian aggression. As President Zelensky appeals for urgent assistance, the fate of Ukraine hangs in the balance, with the outcome of the conflict dependent on the timely support of its allies.
