In a groundbreaking move towards cultural preservation, the Office of the Prime Minister has earmarked a staggering UGX 220 Million for the construction of the Kumam Cultural Heritage Palace in Kaberamaido. The announcement, delivered by His Highness Raphael Otaya, signals a significant step forward in honoring Uganda’s rich cultural tapestry.
His Highness Otaya, leader of the Kumam Cultural Heritage, expressed gratitude while receiving 60 translated copies of the Republic of Uganda’s constitution in the Kumam language. This gesture underscores the government’s commitment to inclusivity and linguistic diversity.
Minister of Teso Affairs, Dr. Ongalao Obote Clement Kenneth Mp, affirmed the government’s support for the project, emphasizing the need for land availability and cost-effective design proposals from the Kumam Cultural Heritage. The construction, slated to commence in the 2024/2025 fiscal year, will be executed by the UPDF Engineering Brigade NEC, ensuring efficiency and quality in implementation.
Victor Rex’s Ekesu, District Chairperson of Kaberamaido, lauded the government’s initiative, citing the allocation of land and the district’s unwavering support for the palace’s construction. The district council’s unanimous approval of the land allocation underscores its commitment to preserving cultural heritage.
Monica Emiru Enyou, a member of the Uganda Law Reform Commission, highlighted the significance of translating the constitution into indigenous languages, citing its accessibility benefits for non-English speakers. With only a handful of languages remaining for translation, the government’s efforts in this regard reflect a dedication to upholding constitutional rights for all citizens.
As construction preparations gather momentum, the Kumam Cultural Heritage Palace stands poised to become a beacon of cultural pride and historical legacy, uniting communities and preserving Uganda’s rich heritage for generations to come.
