Dr. Tom Okurut, the former executive director of Uganda’s National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), passed away on Sunday afternoon at Platinum Hospital in Nakasero, Kampala. His demise, following brain surgery, has saddened many who admired his dedication to environmental preservation.
During his decade-long tenure at NEMA, spanning from 2011 to his recent departure, Dr. Okurut demonstrated unwavering commitment to safeguarding Uganda’s natural resources. His leadership was marked by numerous initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable development and conserving the environment for future generations.
Notably, Dr. Okurut prioritized the protection of Teso region’s ecological integrity, recognizing its significance for local communities and the nation at large. His contributions to Teso’s development are invaluable, and his legacy will live on through the environmental policies and projects he championed.
Beyond Teso, Dr. Okurut’s influence resonated across Uganda, earning him recognition as a prominent figure in the fight for environmental conservation. His leadership played a pivotal role in shaping NEMA’s strategies and policies, driving progress towards a greener and more sustainable future for the country.
Dr. Okurut’s passing represents a loss not only for the environmental community but also for the nation as a whole. His visionary leadership and dedication have left an enduring mark on Uganda’s environmental consciousness, inspiring others to continue his vital work.
