The high court in Soroti has set 7th May 2024 as the date in which the court shall run on the contempt of court case filed against the Attorney general and Soroti city council for failing to implement court orders.
Soroti city together with the Attorney General was dragged to court by Joshua Okkello in a contempt of court case arising from the miscellaneous application no 13 of 2022.
In the case, Okello had dragged Soroti City to court in October 2022 for illegal street parking of passenger vehicles, loading and offloading of passengers along the streets of Soroti city which has caused several deaths in accidents.
In April last year, court made a ruling in favor of Okello who had picked the matter in public interest tasking Soroti city council to restrain offloading, Parking of passenger vehicles on street parking lots, construction of the around about and a bus terminal.
Despite these court orders, Soroti city has done nothing and passenger vehicles still continue to park and load passengers along the streets
In the case, Okello wants Soroti city to be tasked to implement the court directives and pay a fine of 800,000,000 million shs for disobeying court orders.
Out of this, 500,000,000 million is to compensate the applicant for the loss and suffering caused as a result of court contempt. He also seeks that the first responded be committed to civil prison for contempt of court orders.
