In the youthful city of Soroti, a group of concerned citizens, led by the charismatic Tom Ewoku, has launched the “Soroti At Heart Integrity Idol Award” to combat corruption in local government. This initiative aims to promote transparency and accountability, building on successful social media campaigns that exposed corrupt officials.
The Integrity Idol Award will honor Soroti City employees who consistently demonstrate moral and ethical behavior. Ismael Ochen, a local resident, highlighted the award criteria, noting that nominees must strive to keep promises, insist on honesty, and ensure transparency in all dealings.
Departments within the Soroti City Council will nominate up to three candidates, who will then be subjected to a community vote. Nominations will come from journalists, the Human Resources department, church elders, and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs). A vetting process by the Council of Elders, CSOs, and Soroti At Heart members will precede the public vote.
The campaign, supported by local businesses, organizations, and individual contributions, aims to eradicate corruption and enhance local revenue collection. Ewoku emphasized the focus areas for this year: revenue, service delivery, and fund utilization to develop Soroti city. Contributions can be sent to the momo account 895290 under the name Soroti at Heart.
The initiative is expected to significantly impact the fight against corruption and build public trust in government officials. Winners will receive accolades, including lapel badges, plaques, heifers, and certificates.
Renowned young advocate Emmanuel Ilaborot Otim supports the cause, emphasizing the need to fight corruption to prevent it from undermining development.
The Integrity Idol Award stands as a beacon of hope, showing that even in the face of entrenched corruption, ordinary citizens can rise with innovative strategies to create a brighter future for their community.
