The Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) has officially endorsed Sarah Aguti Nyangkori as candidate for the Dokolo District Woman Member of Parliament By-Election.
During the District delegate’s conference held at St. Francis Xavier Vocational School in Dokolo, Nyangkori emerged unopposed where Anna Okwir and Josephine Acen Atia, who had initially expressed interest in the candidacy, withdrew their bids in her favor.
The conference, attended by 204 delegates from across the District, saw Aguti Nyangkori previously carried the party’s flag during the 2021 general election for the same seat nominated to represent the party.
In response to stepping down, Anna Okwir called on UPC supporters to rally behind Nyangkori and emphasized the importance of garnering support from other political parties.
“It’s not only UPC going to vote so we should know that we need all these other parties to vote for us and we should show respect and use very good language towards them because our individual strengths may not help us.” she said.
Chris Ongom, UPC’s vice chairman for Northern Uganda, clarified that the party’s flag bearer is elected by the district delegate conference, emphasizing the democratic process within the party.
Nyangkori while addressing the delegates, pledged to serve the people of Dokolo regardless of their political affiliations, with a focus on improving healthcare and education.
The Dokolo district UPC registrar, William Onyanga stressed the significance of having increased UPC representation in Parliament ahead of the 2026 General Election.
UPC is the third political party to nominate a candidate for the upcoming By-election, following nominations by the NRM and FDC.
