In a momentous occasion, the faithful of Moroto district gathered to witness the consecration and inauguration of the newly constructed Cathedral in Moroto Diocese, dedicated to the Merciful Love of Jesus. The event, held in Nakapelimen village, Moroto Municipality, brought together the people of God from all corners of the Catholic Church in North Eastern Uganda.
Archbishop Luigi Bianco, the Apostolic Nuncio to Uganda, was the main celebrant during the colorful function, which began with Holy Mass. The ceremony was graced by the Vice President, Maj. (Rtd) Jessica Rose Alupo Epel. In his homily, Bianco emphasized the significance of the cathedral as a place of worship, service, and ministry, urging the faithful to utilize it maximally as a house of prayer.
“I pray that the new cathedral does not remain like a monument whose beauty and design is only admired, but that it should build the spiritual life and the faith of the faithful of our diocese,” Bianco said.
In a message delivered by Vice President Alupo, President Yoweri Museveni congratulated the Uganda Episcopal Conference and the entire global Catholic Church on the successful election of the new Pope, His Holiness Pope Leo XIV. Museveni appreciated the work of construction of the Cathedral, thanking all those who contributed to its completion through fundraising and other means.
“You chose to dedicate it to the mercy and love of Jesus Christ, which can only be manifest in action rather than words. You have indeed lived to this biblical principle of faith and love with action,” Museveni said, referencing the book of James 2:14.
The President emphasized the importance of spirituality in development, highlighting its role in enforcing values like integrity and humane practices that enable growth. He also urged the church to blend spirituality with hard work and to continue initiating projects in line with government strategies towards liberation from dependency on government resources.
The Bishop of Moroto Diocese, Damiano Guzzetti, explained that the consecration of a cathedral represents a commitment to faith, a declaration of devotion, and a recognition of the sacred nature of the space.
The event was attended by prominent dignitaries, including politicians and clergy members from various Catholic dioceses in Uganda.
