Tragedy struck Ntinda, a Kampala suburb, on Thursday evening as unknown assailants shot and killed Albert Cook Tugume, brother to Kampala Deputy Lord Mayor Doreen Nyanjura, in an apparent armed robbery. Tugume, who operated a mobile money shop, was attacked near Fraine Supermarket in Ntinda-Kigoowa.
The gunmen fled the scene with an unspecified amount of money, leaving residents in shock. Ms. Nyanjura initially posted on X (formerly Twitter) at 8:42 pm, reporting that Tugume had been abducted at gunpoint. Just 15 minutes later, at 8:57 pm, she confirmed the devastating news that her brother had been fatally shot.
The incident highlights the growing insecurity in the area, with mobile money operators increasingly targeted by armed criminals. Authorities are yet to provide details about the assailants or progress in the investigation.
This harrowing event has sent ripples of grief through the Ntinda community and beyond, as residents call for heightened security measures to curb the rising crime rate. Tugume’s death underscores the urgent need for intervention to protect vulnerable business operators.
This is a developing story, and updates will follow as more details emerge.
