Bulambuli District Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), Emmanuel Olaboro, has officially announced his intention to contest for the Member of Parliament seat in Orungo County, Amuria District, in the upcoming 2026 general elections. His candidacy pits him directly against Uganda’s current Minister of Foreign Affairs, General Jeje Odongo Abubakar, a veteran politician who has represented the constituency for over two terms.
While addressing Christians at St. Cosmas and Damian Akeriau Catholic Parish, Olaboro expressed his desire to bring what he described as “fresh leadership” to Orungo County. He emphasized the need for practical solutions to the challenges faced by the local community, particularly in education, healthcare, and agricultural development.
“I believe Orungo County has immense potential that has yet to be fully realized. My focus will be on delivering tangible development initiatives that can improve the livelihoods of our people. We need leaders who will actively engage with the grassroots and ensure that the needs of the community are prioritized,” Olaboro stated.
Olaboro, who has served as CAO in various districts including Kaberamaido and Bulambuli, has earned a reputation for being a hands-on administrator. His experience in local government and development projects is seen as a potential strength in his campaign. However, his decision to challenge General Odongo is likely to set the stage for a fierce political contest.
General Jeje Odongo, who has been a key figure in Uganda’s defense and foreign affairs sectors for many years, is a seasoned politician with deep connections in Orungo County. Having served as the area’s representative since 2016, Odongo has played a significant role in various government initiatives aimed at improving security, infrastructure, and social services in the constituency. His longstanding ties to the National Resistance Movement (NRM) and extensive experience in both military and political leadership make him a formidable opponent.
Despite the challenge ahead, Olaboro remains confident in his chances. He acknowledged that while General Odongo has contributed significantly to the constituency, it is time for a change in leadership to address the evolving needs of the community.
Meanwhile, the Bishop of Soroti Catholic Diocese, who presided over the celebrations, emphasized the importance of peaceful, fair, and transparent elections. Bishop Eciru urged politicians to avoid physical altercations and instead focus on presenting their platforms to the electorate. Furthermore, he called on voters in Teso to elect individuals who are dedicated to serving their community.
