The Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development, Hon. Amongi Betty Akena has called on World Leaders to focus on collective commitment and determination to address economic inequality.
Delivering a moving speech at the United Nation’s International Labour Organization 111th annual Conference in Geneva, Switzerland, Amongi said the aspirations of ILO crafted at its inception a century ago, of putting people at the heart of social development, should be revisited.
“We must design policies to promote equal opportunities that guarantee the rights of each individual to realize their full potential and pursue development,” said Amongi.
According to the Minister, a more equitable and sustainable future should be the guiding principles of actions by governments around the world, if the global community is to achieve social justice for all.
She stressed that governments should prioritize creating opportunities for women, youth and other vulnerable groups through scaling up global financing for social protection, providing policy to attract enterprise growth, skilling youth and women and focusing on equal access to affordable internet and digital literacy.
“Technological innovations provides amazing opportunities to bring more decent work. We should prioritize and finance creativity and digital innovations,” she asserted.
Noting that in Uganda, many small and medium businesses are now operating online.
The High level meeting on the World of Work Summit has been addressed by the President of Switzerland, the UN Secretary General, Director General of ILO and many Heads of State are lined up to Speak, including the Kenyan President William Ruto.
