Kotido, Uganda – November 23, 2024
Nakere Rural Women’s Activist (NARWOA), in partnership with Women’s International Peace Centre and funded by Global Fund for Women and USAID, successfully convened a review meeting with Disaster Management Committees (DMCs) of Panyangara Sub-county. This strategic gathering aimed to fortify disaster preparedness, response and resilience among local communities.
The meeting brought together key stakeholders, including local leaders, community members and DMC representatives. Discussions centered on enhancing community resilience, early warning systems, emergency planning and capacity building. Participants shared experiences, identified gaps and outlined collective strategies to mitigate disasters’ impact.
NARWOA’s Project Officer Anero Florence Apuun emphasized, “Community-led initiatives are vital in disaster management. We’re committed to supporting Panyangara Sub-county’s efforts to build resilience.”
Key outcomes included:
– Strengthened collaboration among DMCs and local stakeholders
– Enhanced community awareness on disaster risk reduction
– Identified areas for capacity building and resource mobilization
– Revised contingency plans for effective disaster response
To build on this momentum, NARWOA will:
– Conduct training sessions for DMC members
– Establish early warning systems in vulnerable communities
– Develop community-led disaster response initiatives.
The meeting concluded with a unified commitment to enhancing disaster management capacities in Panyangara Sub-county. Participants acknowledged the critical role of community-led initiatives in driving positive change.
