In a high-stakes showdown for the Dokolo district woman member of Parliament seat, political heavyweights from Uganda’s leading parties clashed as the Electoral Commission kicked off the nomination process.
The spectacle commenced with fervor as the National Resistance Movement’s (NRM) formidable contender, Adongo Rose Janet Elau, led the charge at 9 am. Accompanied by NRM’s mobilization head, Hon Rose Mary Ssenide, and her deputy Samuel Eyenga, Elau set the stage for a riveting political contest.
Following suit, Aguti Sarah Nyangkoroi of the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) awaited her turn, initially scheduled for 11 am but delayed until 1 pm. Nyangkoroi, flanked by UPC President Jimmy Michael Akena, made a grand entrance, amplifying the buzz surrounding the nominations.
Meanwhile, Dr. Rosemary Alwoc of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) threw her hat in the ring, seeking to fill the void left by her late mother, Cecilia Atim Ogwal. Ogwal, the former woman MP, passed away at 77 on January 18, 2024, leaving behind a legacy that resonated deeply in Dokolo.
As the contenders converged on the nomination venue, Dokolo Town Council pulsated with anticipation, coming to a standstill as Akena and his UPC entourage descended upon the scene. Akena’s formidable team, including prominent figures like Santa Alum Ogwang (MP, Oyam district), Maruzi North MP Nelson Okello Lemba, Secretary-General Fred Ebil Ebil, Dickens Kennedy Odongo, and Auma Kenny (Kwania district woman MP), underscored the significance of the moment.
In a parallel effort, FDC’s President Patrick Oboi and Secretary-General Nathan Nadal Mafabi rallied support for Dr. Alwoc, intensifying the electoral fervor in Dokolo district.
As the stage is set and the battle lines drawn, Dokolo braces for a political spectacle unlike any other. With the stakes soaring and aspirations soaring higher, the forthcoming elections promise to reshape the district’s political landscape and echo the aspirations of its people. The quest for the Dokolo district woman MP seat unfolds amidst a tapestry of hope, ambition, and the relentless pursuit of democratic ideals.
