The political scene in Soroti City East Division is heating up as candidates vie for the member of parliament seat. The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has solidified support for Moses Okia Atan, while Junior Okwii Ekutelek is positioning himself as the NRM candidate following the incumbent, Herbert Edmund Ariko, shifting focus to Gweri county.
Ekutelek announced his candidacy at a funeral in Acetgwen ward, criticizing Ariko for abandoning the electorates and claiming he aims to address the leadership crisis. However, his bid has drawn criticism, with allegations of his close ties to Herbert Edmond Ariko, who has exited urban politics but is perceived to be backing Ekutelek.
Supporters of Attan have rejected Ekutelek, accusing him of involvement in vote rigging during the controversial 2022 bye-election that saw Ariko declared the winner. This dissatisfaction with the NRM has fueled speculation that voters may lean towards opposition candidates in the upcoming elections.
Additionally, Ekutelek faces corruption allegations linked to his role as secretary general purpose committee in Soroti City council, specifically regarding leasing land at the golf course.
Complicating matters, Capt. Mike Mukula is reportedly promoting his son for the NRM flag, suggesting a competitive primary election ahead for Ekutelek.
The political dynamics are evolving, and the situation remains fluid as more candidates emerge to challenge Ekutelek’s ambitions.
