Amuru – November 26, 2024 – The Long-Distance Truck Driver Association, stationed at the Elegu Border, has announced their intention to embark on a strike beginning November 27, 2024. In their official communication, the association highlighted a series of challenges faced by truck drivers traveling along the Nimule-Juba highway, a crucial trade route into South Sudan. Drivers from East African countries, including Tanzania, Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi, and Uganda, have raised concerns over alleged insecurity, extortion, torture, and harassment along this stretch of road.
Recognizing the critical nature of this development, Amuru District Security has swiftly taken steps to address the matter. The leadership is actively engaging with key stakeholders, including representatives of the truck drivers, to understand their grievances and find immediate solutions. Additionally, coordinated efforts are underway with South Sudanese authorities to enhance security and ensure the safety of all individuals and goods transiting through the region.
While the concerns raised are significant, the district security team has reiterated its commitment to maintaining law and order at the border. Measures are being put in place to safeguard trade and transportation activities, recognizing the vital role this highway plays in regional commerce. Stakeholders are urged to remain calm and cooperative as the situation is addressed.
The Amuru District Security leadership is optimistic that through dialogue and joint action, the concerns of the truck drivers can be resolved, averting the potential disruption posed by the strike. Further updates will be provided as new developments unfold.
