Emorimor Paul Sande Etomeileng Emolot has called for urgent public awareness regarding the impending oil mining activities in Teso Sub-region.
This plea comes in light of the Ugandan government’s announcement, through Energy Minister Sindronius Okaasai Opolot, about the confirmed presence of petroleum in the Kyoga and Bisina catchment areas.
During a meeting with clan heads at Katakwi Boma grounds on January 23, 2025, Emorimor emphasized the importance of sensitizing the community before any actions are taken that could impact their land.
He expressed concern over potential displacement and the environmental repercussions that could accompany oil extraction.
The regions identified for potential oil mining, including Soroti, Kaberamaido, Kalanick, Severe, Katakwi, Bukedea, and Kumi, have sparked considerable public debate regarding the implications for local residents.
Warning against exploitation by wealthy individuals seeking to purchase land at undervalued prices, Emorimor urged the government to fairly assess the true value of the local population and their lands.
He stated, “We shall not allow anyone to take advantage of the people of Teso by depriving them of their privileges,” highlighting the need for protective measures for locals.
The paramount chief also tasked clan leaders with disseminating crucial information to their communities to prevent hasty land sales to foreign entities primarily interested in oil extraction.
Emorimor assured those present that his cabinet would convene a consultative meeting to discuss the region’s petroleum strategies, although he refrained from detailing any specific plans until broader consultations are complete.
In addition to addressing potential challenges, Emorimor outlined various opportunities that could arise from oil mining, such as educational sponsorships, business development, infrastructure improvements, and job creation.
He expressed optimism that the responsible management of petroleum and other mineral resources in Teso could lead to significant economic transformation for the region.
