Busiro East Member of Parliament Medard Lubega Sseggona has announced that he will contest as an independent candidate in the 2026 General Election, following his denial of the National Unity Platform (NUP) flag. The party ticket was awarded to Kyengera Town Mayor Mathias Walukagga, a musician and politician.
Sseggona, a seasoned legislator and lawyer, expressed his determination to represent the people of Busiro East despite the setback. “We are grateful to the district government for initiating the long-awaited repairs,” Sseggona had previously said in a different context, showcasing his appreciation for development projects. However, in light of the recent development, he stated, “I was asked what I have done for National Unity Platform NUP, but honestly speaking, what haven’t I done for the party?”
Sseggona defended himself against allegations that led to his alleged disqualification from the NUP ticket, including claims that he received Shs 100 million from the state. He explained that investigations revealed transfer papers showing he had sold one of his properties to gain the money, dismissing the notion of it being a bribe. “The party conducted investigations and found transfer papers showing that I had sold one of my properties to gain that money, so it was not a bribe from somewhere unlawful,” Sseggona said.
The NUP’s decision to drop Sseggona and other incumbents like Joyce Bagala, a former journalist and Woman MP for Mityana, was reportedly influenced by internal party tensions and loyalty issues. Sseggona and Bagala were seen as allies of Mathias Mpuuga, the former NUP deputy president for Buganda, who fell out with NUP leader Robert Kyagulanyi over a controversial Shs 500 million “service award”
Sseggona’s decision to run independently could potentially split the opposition vote, helping the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) win in Busiro East. However, his popularity in the constituency and experience in politics make him a better candidate. Walukagga, on the other hand, has stated that he will not contest independently if denied the NUP flag, citing party loyalty.
With nominations for MPs set to be held this October, Sseggona’s next move will be crucial in determining the outcome of the election. His resilience and determination to serve the people of Busiro East will likely keep him relevant in the political landscape.
