Gunfire and explosions rocked Bukavu, a city in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, on Thursday, as M23 rebels held a rally just two weeks after seizing control of the city. The attack occurred shortly after Corneille Nangaa, leader of the Congo River Alliance (AFC), a group within the M23, addressed the crowd.
During his speech, Nangaa announced plans to implement “security measures” in Uvira, a city in South Kivu province, similar to those taken in Goma and Bukavu. He also vowed to drive out insecurity in several areas, including Shabunda, Mwenga, Fizi, and Kamituga.
This incident is the latest in a series of violent clashes in the region. The M23 rebels have been advancing in eastern Congo, capturing key cities and exacerbating the humanitarian crisis. The conflict has displaced over 6.5 million people, with many more facing severe insecurity and humanitarian challenges.
As tensions continue to escalate, the international community is calling for renewed peace talks and an end to the violence. The situation remains precarious, with fears that the conflict could spiral further out of control.
