The leadership of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) on Saturday strongly endorsed Mary Gorrety Atemo as the party’s sole candidate for the Kumi Woman MP seat in the upcoming 2026 elections. Jonathan Ebwalu, the Member of Parliament for Soroti City West, called on the people of Kumi to rally behind Atemo and other FDC candidates, emphasizing the importance of supporting homegrown leaders.
“FDC has produced great leaders, including a former Speaker of Parliament. We are mobilizing from constituency to constituency, and despite the challenges, we are determined to move forward,” Ebwalu stated.
Echoing his sentiments, Ngora Woman MP Stella Apolot Isodo stressed the need for stronger FDC representation in Parliament. “We need more FDC MPs from Teso to amplify our voices and advocate for better services for our people,” she said.
Atemo has gained strong backing from key figures within the party, with Acom Alobo Joan, Woman MP for Soroti City, lauding her resilience and commitment to the people of Kumi. Alobo urged the youth to reject the allure of short-term political handouts and instead vote for visionary leadership.
“Age should not be the issue here performance is what matters. Atemo has been a consistent ally in the fight for your rights. Support her, and she will represent you effectively in Parliament,” Alobo urged.
Alobo also criticized the ruling NRM government for failing to meet its promises to the people of Teso, pointing out that the region once thrived as Uganda’s food basket but now faces significant struggles due to poor policies. “When I was growing up, Teso was Uganda’s food basket. Today, our people suffer because of failed policies. It’s time for real change with FDC,” she added.
Nathan Nandala Mafabi, FDC Secretary General, reassured the people of Kumi that FDC remains the best alternative to address their pressing needs. He condemned the NRM for neglecting the region and urged voters to reject the current government’s lack of progress.
FDC President Patrick Oboi Amuriat (POA) was even more direct in his criticism of the NRM, emphasizing that after more than 40 years in power, the government had failed to deliver substantial development. “If NRM couldn’t develop this country in 40 years, do you think they will do it in the next five? Things will only get worse,” POA warned.
POA also condemned the government’s reliance on foreign aid and mismanagement of national resources, particularly in critical sectors like agriculture, healthcare, and education. He pointed out the neglect of Uganda’s farmers and the persistent unemployment among the youth. “Museveni spends more money on his family and his office than on essential services. Our youth remain unemployed, and our farmers suffer. It’s time to vote wisely in 2026,” POA emphasized.
Furthermore, POA reminded the crowd of the unfulfilled promises made by the NRM, specifically regarding cattle compensation, and rallied the people of Teso to take a stand. “If our cows are not returned, our message is clear—No Cow, No Vote!” he declared.
Mary Gorrety Atemo, in her speech, expressed deep gratitude for the unwavering support she has received from the FDC leadership and her supporters. She pledged to be a steadfast advocate for the people of Kumi, prioritizing accountability and development if elected to Parliament.
“Your love and solidarity inspire me. I promise to always stand by your side, advocating for good governance and the needs of our people,” Atemo said, acknowledging the presence of her parents at the event for their ongoing support and guidance.
FDC leaders made it clear that the party is committed to revitalizing its presence in Kumi and the wider Teso region. POA called on party members to fill vacant political positions and contest in all available electoral slots. “Where has our energy gone? Let’s rise again and contest! Kumi County and Kumi Municipality need strong FDC candidates. Atemo has energized us, and we cannot let this momentum fade,” POA urged.
He pledged to personally mobilize at the grassroots level, even if it meant staying in villages to ensure the revival of the party. “Whether Museveni likes it or not, I will sleep in villages to awaken our party. We must reclaim Kumi!” POA vowed.
The FDC’s powerful show of strength in Kumi marks the beginning of a fierce political contest ahead of the 2026 elections. With strong support for Mary Gorrety Atemo, the party is determined to reclaim lost ground and restore its influence in the Teso sub-region.
As election fever intensifies, the people of Kumi face a pivotal decision whether to continue supporting the ruling NRM or embrace the change promised by FDC and its candidates, particularly Mary Gorrety Atemo.
