Former Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Mathias Mpuuga, and his successor, Joel Ssenyonyi, set aside their differences as they crossed paths for the first time since a series of public confrontations.

The historic encounter took place at the prestigious Kabaka’s Palace (Lubiri) in Mengo, where they both attended the Kabaka’s Birthday Run. Despite the palpable tension, Mpuuga and Ssenyonyi exchanged brief greetings, signaling a possible thaw in their previously strained relationship.

The Kabaka’s Birthday Run, a grand affair attended by tens of thousands of people, saw Nalinya Lubuga Agnes Nabaloga, accompanied by the Katikiro Charles Peter Mayiga, leading the charge. Kabaka Mutebi, renowned as an international ambassador in the fight against HIV/AIDS in Africa, delegated Nalinya Lubuga to flag off the event, emphasizing the importance of the run in raising funds for combating the epidemic.

Notably, participants from various corners of the kingdom, representing its diverse constituencies, joined hands in solidarity during the run. This display of unity echoed the overarching theme of the event: rallying together to tackle pressing societal challenges.

Mpuuga’s recent political trajectory, marked by controversies surrounding his tenure and subsequent removal as Deputy President of the Central Region by the National Unity Platform (NUP), has been a subject of intense scrutiny and criticism. His presence at the run alongside Ssenyonyi, amidst ongoing political turbulence within NUP, adds another layer of intrigue to the unfolding political narrative.

As Uganda’s political landscape continues to evolve, the unexpected convergence of former adversaries at the Kabaka’s Birthday Run serves as a poignant reminder of the power of unity and collaboration in addressing critical issues facing the nation.
