Kampala- Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and First Son, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has sparked intense public debate after openly criticizing the former Deputy CDF, Lt Gen Peter Elwelu, in a series of social media posts. The comments have raised concerns about potential divisions within the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) top leadership.
In a controversial post on X (formerly Twitter), Gen Kainerugaba referred to Lt Gen Elwelu as a “buffoon” and questioned his suitability for service. “Elwelu is a buffoon! He is completely unworthy of our great Army! He better run as fast as his small legs can carry him,” wrote the CDF in a tweet that quickly gained viral attention.
This attack followed an earlier cryptic post in which Gen Kainerugaba hinted at targeting an unnamed individual. “There is one FOOL that I will arrest soon. He is hiding behind my father, but I will capture him. He comes from Teso,” he wrote, later identifying Lt Gen Elwelu as the subject of his remarks.
Attempts to reach Lt Gen Elwelu, were unsuccessful. He has yet to issue a public response.
Political analysts and security experts are closely monitoring the situation, given the critical roles both generals play in Uganda’s military. Observers have expressed concern that such public disputes could undermine cohesion and morale within the UPDF.
The Ministry of Defence has not commented on the matter, leaving the public to speculate about the causes and consequences of this rift. Many are awaiting further clarification to understand the broader implications for Uganda’s defense and political landscape.
