In a dramatic turn of events that has left the National Resistance Movement (NRM) in Soroti district reeling, Richard Elimu, the PLU Secretary for Teso sub-region, has emerged victorious in the district chairperson entrepreneurship elections, defeating the longest-serving NRM chairperson and presidential advisor, Mzee Charles Elasu.
The elections, held at Soroti Core PTC, saw Elasu make a last-minute attempt to salvage his chances by withdrawing from the district chairperson race and instead contesting for the district chairperson entrepreneurship position. However, delegates were unimpressed by his tactics, and Elimu’s determination and support proved too great to overcome.
According to sources present at the elections, Elasu’s decision to withdraw from the district chairperson race and contest for the entrepreneurship position was met with widespread disapproval from delegates, who felt betrayed by his actions. “We cannot give Elasu our votes again,” delegates lamented. “He has disappointed us, and we will not trust him with our votes.”
In contrast, Richard Elimu’s victory was met with jubilation, with many delegates praising his leadership and vision for the district. Elimu dedicated his win to God’s grace, saying it was a testament to the trust and confidence that NRM delegates have in his ability to bring business opportunities and development to the district.
Elimu’s message resonated with delegates, who are eager for leaders who will prioritize their needs and work towards prosperity, peace, unity, and development. “NRM needs leaders who think for the local population, not just their own stomachs,” Elimu said, vowing to engage party leaders at the grassroots level to embark on entrepreneurship activities and drive development in the district.
The newly elected leadership team is comprised of Richard Elimu as Chairperson, with other key positions going to Dakabelas Edeku Edopu as Vice Chairperson, Elasu George Bosco as Secretary, Ekaru Willy for Finance, and Agoe Leah as Publicity.
With this victory, Richard Elimu has sent shockwaves through the NRM in Soroti, and Mzee Elasu’s long tenure as district chairman appears to have come to an end. The question on everyone’s lips now is: what’s next for Soroti under Elimu’s leadership?
