Dr. Kizza Besigye, widely known as Dr. KB, is scheduled to appear before the General Court Martial in Makindye on December 7th. Hajji Faruk Kirunda, Deputy Press Secretary to His Excellency the President of Uganda, has in his Opinion urged Besigye’s legal team and supporters to prepare thoroughly and focus on securing his bail through constitutional and legal means, rather than resorting to political narratives.
Kirunda reaffirmed the legitimacy and functionality of the Court Martial, emphasizing its track record in handling cases involving political figures. He criticized accusations of political bias leveled against the Court, describing them as unproductive and a distraction from the legal processes at hand. Instead, he called for a strategic approach rooted in constitutional provisions, highlighting that a Presidential pardon remains an option under established procedures.
In his statement on X formerly Twitter, Kirunda said:
“The legal team and supporters of Dr. Kizza Besigye should prepare well to secure for him bail at his next appearance as per the Constitution and through the established process. Questioning the legal jurisdiction of the Court Martial politically when it’s fully functional, trying different suspects on various charges, doesn’t alleviate his burden at this time. He would also be eligible for a Presidential pardon like others who have benefitted before, again under established procedures.”
Besigye is currently facing charges of illegal possession of firearms and allegations of collaborating with foreign agents to destabilize the country. Reports indicate that his defense team, comprising over 50 lawyers and led by former Kenyan Justice Minister Martha Karua, is preparing a robust case.
Kirunda’s remarks reflect the government’s confidence in the judicial system’s integrity and its capacity to deliver justice. As Deputy Press Secretary, he emphasized the importance of adhering to established legal frameworks, urging Besigye’s supporters to prioritize the law over political smear campaigns. His appeal underlines the necessity for calm and focus as the legal proceedings unfold.
