Today, September 19, 2024, tourism stakeholders, government officials, and development partners have gathered at Hotel Africana in Kampala for the highly anticipated World Tourism Day 2024 Conference. Themed “Tourism and Peace,” this event brings together key leaders to explore the vital role tourism plays in promoting peace, social cohesion, and economic development in Uganda and the region.
Hosted by Col. Tom Butime, Minister of Tourism, Wildlife, and Antiquities, the conference features a keynote address by Hon. Norbert Mao, Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs. Panel discussions will be moderated by Maurice Mugisha and include renowned figures like Amb. Jan Sadek, Head of the European Union Delegation in Uganda; Anne Nkutu, Governor of Rotary District 9213; Brig. Gen. Felix Kulayigye, Spokesperson of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces; and Mr. Amos Wekesa, Founder & CEO of Great Lakes Safaris.
Key topics for the day will center on how tourism intersects with peace and development, sustainable tourism as a peacebuilding tool, and the regional pacification’s influence on tourism growth.
