In a move aimed at empowering local communities and improving livelihoods, Peter Edeku Edopu, an aspiring Member of Parliament (MP) for Dakabela County, has provided crucial support to village savings groups in Katine Sub County with over 3 million shillings. This gesture has sparked excitement and optimism among residents, especially those in Olocoi, Awidiang and Ojulo villages.
Edeku, who is gearing up for the 2026 general election, made a bold step by providing seed capital to several savings groups. This financial boost is expected to significantly enhance the groups’ ability to save and invest in income-generating activities.
During a meeting in Olocoi village, the community gathered to listen to Edeku’s message. Scovia Alupo, the chairperson of the Olocoi Women’s Group, expressed her gratitude, praising Edeku as a leader with the community’s best interests at heart. Alupo highlighted his support for various community activities, including the development of churches, schools, and roads, which has already positively impacted the area.
Victorina Araio, chairperson of the Olocoi Elders Group Akwetasi, shared how her group, which started with members saving just one thousand shillings weekly, has now managed to purchase a sheep for each member. Araio believes that Edeku’s timely support will enable the group to further multiply their savings and achieve even greater success.
David Ocela, the Local Council 1 (LC1) chairperson of Olocoi village, echoed the community’s appreciation, thanking Edeku for his support and urging Dakabela County voters to back his candidacy in the upcoming elections.
Deborah Amaso, chairperson of the Awidiang Akwentutu Women’s Savings Group, also expressed her thanks to Edeku, encouraging her fellow villagers to seize this opportunity to improve their household livelihoods.
In Ojulo village, where Edeku also commissioned the handover of household utensils and sheep to savings groups, Patrick Ebitu, the LC1 chairperson, took the opportunity to challenge Edeku to address pressing local issues, including the improvement of roads and the ongoing water scarcity.
In his remarks, Edeku emphasized that the financial support provided to the savings groups is aimed at boosting their savings and encouraging continued commitment to saving as a pathway to improved livelihoods. He urged the community to form more savings groups, enabling them to benefit from various government programs designed to uplift local communities. He outlined his vision as to ensure that each family in Dakabela to get involved in economic activities to ensure that each family has something to sell in the market to generate enough income to sustain it.
Edeku also pledged to address the concerns raised by the community, including the need for better roads and water access, as part of his broader commitment to improving living conditions in Dakabela County.
As the 2026 elections approach, Edeku’s support for these savings groups and his focus on community development are likely to play a significant role in his campaign, potentially winning the hearts and votes of Dakabela County residents.
