The Iteso Cultural Union (ICU) has approved an ambitious architectural plan worth 15 million USD (equivalent to 55.5 billion UGX) for the construction of Ere Iteso, a cultural center that will serve as a landmark in Teso.

Designed by Oubuntu Architectural Designs, the seven-story structure will house the offices of the Emorimor, cabinet ministers, a community hall, and a museum. This landmark decision was made today at the ICU offices, where Emmanuel Echodu, an architect from Oubuntu Architectural Designs, and his associate signed the memorandum of understanding (MOU).

According to Echodu, the project inspired by traditional Teso arts is designed to create a legacy that could last over 100 years if high-quality materials are used. Oubuntu will also oversee the construction.
Dr. Charles Peter Otim, chairperson of the Ere Iteso construction committee, officially handed over the MOU to Echodu. Dr Otim highlighted that this plan marks the first significant step toward realizing the Ere Iteso vision. Pending city authority approvals, the groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for November 27, with the Army Engineering Brigade set to undertake construction.
Nosianta Emechu, ICU Council chairperson, encouraged clan leaders to mobilize resources for the project. She expressed her excitement and praised the ICU council, cabinet, and committee for their dedication.
To cover the construction costs, Dr. Pascal Osire, vice chairperson of the committee, announced that ICU will launch a fundraising campaign targeting both local and international supporters. Government support includes 250 million UGX from the Ministry of Teso Affairs and an additional 1.5 million USD (approximately 6 billion UGX) from the Ministry of Gender.

The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) reports that there are approximately 3.7 million Iteso. If each person contributed 3,700 UGX (equivalent to 1 USD), about 14 billion UGX could be raised for the project—a proposal gaining strong support among Iteso leaders such as Francis Eriaku.
The Ere Iteso cultural center will be built on a one-hectare plot opposite Soroti Hotel, marking a new chapter in preserving and celebrating Iteso heritage.
