Her Majesty the Queen of Teso, Akaliait Juliet Among, has issued a call to action for the women and girls of Teso to prioritize the preparation of local dishes.
Her message comes in response to rising health concerns within the community, as she links the increased mortality rates to poor dietary habits.
At the funeral of the late Jones Eceru Oluma, the X- Deputy Prime Minister of the Iteso Cultural Union (ICU), Queen Among emphasized the critical role mothers play in shaping the nutritional choices of their families.
She lamented the growing popularity of fried foods and urged a return to traditional meals such as Eboo (greens) and various paste-based dishes.
“Eating local dishes, especially pasted foods, will help boost men’s immunity, keep them energetic, and improve their skin,” she stated, encouraging women to limit fried foods in favor of healthier options.
Queen Among suggested nutritious alternatives, such as pasting fish, smoking meat before cooking, and incorporating greens into every meal.
In addition to her culinary advice, Queen Among spoke on cultural values and attire, urging young women to dress with respect and dignity.
She stressed that the traditional dress code of the Iteso community is an integral part of their identity and called for a move away from short dresses.
She believes that fostering cultural pride in dressing can contribute to lowering incidents of family violence and sexual abuse in the community.
“Let us uphold our cultural values in every aspect of our lives, including our attire,” she concluded, reinforcing the importance of both nutrition and cultural identity for the health and wellbeing of the Teso community.
