Inspector General of Government (IGG), Beti Olive Kamya, has announced a forthcoming investigation into allegations of mismanagement of public offices, funds, and corruption within Parliament. Kamya’s decision follows mounting concerns raised by whistleblowers and the public regarding the internal operations of the legislative body.
In a statement addressing the media, Kamya emphasized the gravity of the situation within Parliament, acknowledging the significant media and public interest it has garnered. She underscored the influx of whistleblower accounts and petitions received by her office, which detail various irregularities occurring within Parliament.
“The issue in Parliament has undoubtedly sparked significant media and public interest, making it impossible to ignore,” Kamya declared. “We have received numerous whistleblower accounts detailing various irregularities within Parliament.”
Kamya further noted the inundation of petitions from ordinary citizens urging the IGG’s office to intervene. She stressed that the combination of her office’s mandate and the overwhelming public interest in the integrity of Parliament necessitates a thorough investigation.
“While our mandate alone would compel us to take action, the overwhelming public interest in the integrity of Parliament, as evidenced by whistleblower accounts, petitions, and complaints, has prompted us to initiate a comprehensive investigation,” she affirmed.
The decision to launch the investigation comes at a time of heightened scrutiny of Parliament and its operations. As the central oversight body tasked with upholding accountability and combating corruption in government institutions, the IGG’s office is now poised to delve into the affairs of the legislative body to ensure transparency and adherence to ethical standards.
The forthcoming investigation signals a commitment to accountability and integrity within Parliament, as the IGG’s office seeks to address concerns raised by whistleblowers and the public. It represents a crucial step towards upholding the principles of good governance and combating corruption in Uganda’s legislative sphere.
