The National Resistance Movement (NRM) and the entire city of Soroti, John Enomu has emerged victorious in the party’s top seat, dealing a devastating blow to long-time leader Willy Bisanga. The internal election, held at Teso College Aloet, saw Enomu secure a resounding 48 votes, leaving Bisanga in the dust with a mere 15 votes.
The outcome has been hailed as a “political earthquake” by many party insiders and local observers, signaling a seismic shift in the party’s urban base in Eastern Uganda. The contest, which originally featured four contenders, including Joseph Egunyu and Latif Abdul, became a two-horse race after Abdul shifted focus to the Secretary for Finance position and Egunyu withdrew, throwing his weight behind Enomu.
Bisanga’s absence from the designated line for candidate backing was seen as a symbolic move that further eroded his base. The incumbent’s disappointment was palpable as he questioned the transparency of the electoral process, claiming that behind-the-scenes negotiations had proceeded without his knowledge or participation.
Despite Bisanga’s objections, NRM electoral commission official Justin Okello confirmed the results, declaring John Enomu the new NRM Chairperson for Soroti City. “This was a transparent and peaceful process,” Okello stated, urging party members to rally behind the new leadership.
Team new energy takes over Soroti City NRM positions with John Enomu as Chairperson, Captain Grace Omuron as Vice Chairperson, Esiat Mosk as Secretary for Publicity, and Ojul Patrick as General Secretary. Enomu’s victory is seen as a reflection of a broader desire for change and generational renewal within the party’s grassroots structures. His leadership is expected to introduce new priorities and approaches to party engagement in the region.
The real work now begins for Enomu, who must navigate the challenges of rebuilding unity, strengthening the party’s urban appeal, and proving that this political earthquake was not just a moment, but the start of a movement. The city of Soroti remains abuzz with discussion about the implications of this leadership overhaul, and only time will tell if Enomu’s leadership will be the catalyst for a new era of growth and prosperity for the NRM in Soroti City.
